About the Expert

Mr. Sexton is a civil/structural engineer providing forensic investigations, structural evaluations, and building envelope assessments across the Great Lakes region. He supports insurance carriers, law firms, property owners, and construction companies on losses and defects involving wind, fire, water intrusion, snow, seismic events, explosions, vibrations, impact, foundation movement, deterioration/corrosion, and construction defects. His work spans residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and governmental facilities, with a focus on determining causation, documenting scope of damage, developing repair protocols, and preparing clear, defensible reports and cost estimates.

He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering focus) from Wayne State University. Prior to joining Engineering Design & Testing Corporation, Mr. Sexton spent the majority of his career as a structural restoration consultant in southeast Michigan. At SME he led project teams on structural condition evaluations, failure investigations, nondestructive and destructive testing of buildings and bridges, analytical calculations, and construction administration for concrete, masonry, roofing, waterproofing, coatings, structural steel, and wood systems. He also performed structural design and analysis for renovations and new construction while at SmithGroup, working extensively in BIM environments.

Mr. Sexton is actively involved in the profession as President Elect (2026–2028) of the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan (SEAMi), having previously served as Treasurer and Director at Large.

When not in the field or preparing reports, he enjoys golfing, attending sporting events and live music, and spending time with his wife, Lauren, and their cat, Domino, in metro Detroit.
