About the Expert

Dr. Scott Lieberman, based in New York City, is the Director of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at EDT, where he brings two decades of specialized experience in failure analysis, materials characterization, and forensic investigation of metallic and non-metallic components. Dr. Lieberman’s expertise spans a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, construction, marine, energy, oil and gas, electronics, fire protection, consumer products, and medical devices.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lieberman has led investigations into complex failures and degradation issues involving materials such as carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, brass and copper alloys, concrete/masonry, and polymers/plastics/composites. His work includes corrosion evaluations, fracture analysis, and materials compatibility assessments of construction materials, plumbing components, and fire protection systems. He has managed numerous high-stakes cases for industrial clients, government authorities, and insurance companies, and has served as an expert witness in legal and insurance contexts.

Prior to joining EDT, Dr. Lieberman held senior roles at SOCOTEC Engineering (formerly Lucius Pitkin/LPI) and Exponent, where his assignments included directing failure analyses for medical devices, conducting R&D on solar panel durability, completing weldability evaluations for building renovation projects, and managing non-destructive evaluation programs. He is well-versed in techniques such as optical and scanning electron microscopy, metallography, and fractography, allowing him to deliver rigorous, data-driven insights for his clients.

In his free time, Dr. Lieberman plays drums and guitar, dabbles in horology and photography, and enjoys exploring New York City and beyond with his family.
