Claim Review and Analysis
Gasoline Storage Tank Fire
During a thunderstorm, a 55,000-barrel American Petroleum Institute (API) cone roof tank was struck by lightning, and the vapor above the internal floating roof was ignited. The cone roof was ejected from the overpressure following ignition. The tank roof landed on the pump station serving the tank piping. Approximately 30,000 barrels of unleaded gasoline were consumed in the fire, the tank shell buckled, and the aluminum internal roof melted. The demolition, replacement and repair costs for the tank, internal roof, foam injection system, piping, pumps and mixers were reviewed for comparison with the observed damage.
