Monitoring

Structural Monitoring of Problematic Construction

Tunneling was required under several large metropolitan office buildings, ranging from five to seven stories tall, approximately 150 years old, and having historic value. The original construction of the buildings consisted of exterior load bearing masonry walls with interior iron framed floors supported by iron columns. The columns were supported on a grillage of granite beams supported by timber piles. The new construction necessitated the removal of the original timber piles. Loads from the old iron columns were transferred via a new steel diagrid to new drilled caissons. As the loads were transferred, the structure was kept level and in service by the use of pancake jacks and transfer girders. Building floor elevations were recorded weekly. Tilt monitors, strategically placed throughout the buildings, were also monitored weekly. Through the course of the new construction, the buildings remained occupied and in service.
