What Led to Lead Bath Pan Fracture?

After approximately three years of service and during operation, weld seams in the pan fractured, resulting in a discharge of molten lead. The pan was repaired and placed back in service. The pan was in service for another two years when the same weld location fractured and discharged molten lead yet again. This time the bath pan was taken out of service. The question remained, however, as to whether the prior weld repair was a contributing factor to the most recent molten lead discharge. To determine whether the prior weld repair was a contributing factor, the repair history and the original fabrication drawings and specifications were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the pan itself was examined and a section of the fractured weld was removed for metallurgical examination.
